Snakes-head Fritillary (Fritillaria meleagris) is classified as Vulnerable on the Vascular Plant Red List for GB but its status is undecided on the Red List for England, presumably because it is debatable whether this is a native flower.
A few of these graceful plants with their unusual, cup shaped, pink-purple, chequered flower on drooping stems, are seen in springtime in the Wildflower Meadow and Orchard at Downlee Lodge, where bulbs have been introduced. A single white flowered plant has been seen in the orchard. They appear to be grazed by rabbits and slow to proliferate here.
